Xin Fang
Xin Fang (b. 1993) is a Chinese artist and documentary filmmaker. Her practice maps the various ways the personal and race overlap.
By charting her own experiences and the community and intertwine with historical socio-political contexts, she questions the individuality and the power of authority.
Born and raised in Shenzhen, Xin came to the United States to continue her bachelor degree in visual journalism and sociology at Boston University (2016). She graduated with the Paula Rhodes Memorial Award, the highest commendation, from the School of Visual Arts in documentary filmmaking (2019). What does it cost to create, and what kind of world will we create now that we are starting to see the cost of our actions? What can we learn from history, and yet what should we do to continue moving forward? These are the questions that led her to produce her thesis film, Before He Starts.
Before He Starts is granted by SVA Alumni Scholarship. This film is going to screen at Tina Keng Gallery (TW), China Institute, Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art at Kansas State University (Fall 2022), and has been selected for the St. Louis International Film Festival, TIDE Film Festival (NYC), EBS International Documentary Film Festival (Korea), Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival (Semi-finalist), and has been archived by Asian Film Archive (Singapore).
