Director’s Statement
I’ve often wondered where my interest in making films originated. I grew up in the blue-collar city of Youngstown, Ohio. My father worked for the city. My grandfather, in a factory. Then I found out my father seriously explored photography and my grandfather had sketchbooks hidden away.
As my grandfather’s health was fading, I felt the need to begin documenting, asking: How did their lives ultimately give me the courage to move to New York and pursue a career as a filmmaker?
In the end, Fathers and Sons became a personal journey presented as a documentary film, crafted from candid interviews and intimate family archival. I cherish it as a love letter to my family and I hope it serves as a unique yet universal multigenerational portrait.
Please enjoy.
