Q&A with David Lombroso
A conversation with filmmaker David Lombroso on his short film, The Audition.
How did you first get into filmmaking?
I started writing fiction when I was a kid, then fell in love with movies as a teenager. It didn't take long for me to pick up a camera and start shooting, a journey that has taken me all the way through to today. As a filmmaker, my work is informed by narrative and literary traditions... it's all language to me.
What was your creative process for this film?
I've always been fascinated by scenarios in which fear halts ambition, and so I came up with a short story about a nervous actress on her first audition. Julia was eager to collaborate, and game to improvise. From there, the decision to keep it to one long take with a slow steady zoom-in was one I came to as a means to hold and increase tension until the ultimate moment of catharsis, when Julia comes back in the room and blows us all away.
What projects are you working on next, and how can people who are interested best support or follow you.
I've got two new short films in post, a feature in development, and a number of other projects in various stages of completion. The best way to follow me is on insta.
