Charlie Burque - by Ryan Turri
BUREAU: When you decided to make this short film, where did you start?
I started making this short in a much different way than any other project I’ve done before. I had a loose idea I wanted to explore so I called my friend Charlie (who plays Charlie in the movie) and said I wanted to shoot something with him that had no real script. We got into right away. We would talk about the idea then go out and shoot a bit, decompress, see where things are going, then head back out to shoot more. The only thing keeping us on track was a rough outline of ideas I scribbled down on a piece of paper.
BUREAU: What kind of hurdles do you face as a filmmaker working in short film?
The hurdles in short filmmaking I face tend to be trying not to make the film bigger than it needs to be. I think the biggest thing is being realistic about what your trying to accomplish with the short. Exploring ideas that can be wrapped up in thirty minutes. It’s a difficult thing to get people to care about your characters especially in short form, so making sure to pay attention to why am I telling this story from this point of view and why would people care. It something I think about everytime I am working on an idea…why am I making this.
BUREAU: What projects are you working on next, and how can people who are interested best support or share that work?
I have a couple scripts I’m really excited about that I am looking to get off the ground, hopefully shooting at least one of them later this year/early next year. I just finished another short that I directed that is in post production now. Anyone that is interested or would want to connect can check me out at ryanturri.com.
